Yesterday I was regretting that I didn’t get much exercise over the weekend especially since I hadn’t done much in the past two weeks either (unless you count walking round Dublin for hours).
Given that my evenings after work these days are jam-packed with this blogging malarkey and the business course I’m doing (which together can take up to 4 hours some evenings, leaving me cross-eyed and ready for bed) I was wondering how I’d fit in anything this week.
And I need exercise. Everybody needs it of course, but some people would be totally fine with just the walk in the woods I did on Saturday.
Not me.
I need a lot more or else I get irritable and cranky. I should probably be mountain-climbing on a daily basis and running mini marathons every week – I’d be the happiest human around.
Of course, if I don’t have time for some exercise in the evenings after work, I hardly have time for mountain-climbing or mini marathons. I guess I could get up extra early to fit something in, heck I used to practice yoga before work for a year, sometimes even getting out of bed at 5.30 am to fit in the hour of practice.
But that super-dedicated, super-disciplined Liz is long gone and the only thing I can get up early for these days is to go to a cafe for coffee and a bit of writing.
That makes me feel productive and satisfied and then I’m happy to start the 9-5 without the usual ‘malaise’ that persists when I’m not doing anything else except waitressing.
So today I was smart and disciplined and fit in my exercise the next best way: I cycled to work.
It takes around 20 minutes each way if I’m feeling energetic, 30 if I’m tired, and while it’s mostly flat, there are a few nice inclines here and there that make your lungs and heart freak out for a minute. Sweet.
That’s my little bit of inspiration for you folks out there, wishing you could be healthier or fitter.
If you can find a way to incorporate it into your routine, you might just do it.
And if instead of cycling to work you’d rather have a croissant and coffee, well that’s fine too cause that’s probably what I’ll be doing tomorrow morning. It’s boring to be too healthy; full of energy, looking great, feeling great, bouncing off the walls from all those kale smoothies…
Who wants that??
Ciao darlings!
