Today was another good day.
Wonder Woman was around this time for sure – if I didn’t have a streak of her inside I’d never have survived the restaurant shift today. I’m currently so pooped I can barely drag one foot in front of the other.
Fridays, ah Fridays… In every restaurant, there’s always one day when the forces come together and shit goes crazy. In this restaurant, Fridays are the bastard of the week.
It all begins with breakfast and carries on through lunch.
I’m telling you, some of the runs I did today, Usain Bolt had nothing on me; could you see the Olympic sprinter taking off down the track with a tray of coffees??
And they call him an athlete. Ha!
You just need to watch us in action during a busy lunch to see real athletes. And we’re incredibly versatile too: a sprint? A marathon? We can do both. At the same time! While loaded down with ten dirty plates and with several o orders on the go, just minutes away from getting abused by the head-chef for putting through an idiotic complicated order (roast beef with no mash, no veggies, extra bacon and chips, sauce on the side, stuffing on the side, separate plate for the meat….
To be fair, trying to read all that in the midst of the 200 other dockets would make my brain explode too so I can kind of see where he’s coming from.
And we do all of these things with a smile.
Even if our jaw is clenched and our eyes are shooting out poison arrows right into the person’s heart, we still smile and we’re still polite.
And unlike Usain we don’t get any special training or expert nutrition or massages in between shifts; we don’t get paid a fortune or earn celebrity status.
No, I am but the lowly waitress, here to serve random customers, quite possibly til the day I drop dead while carrying a steak sandwich and a fish and chips to a young couple on table 29.
And you know what will happen then?
People will take out their phone to video the event for youtube, while the couple will complain because they have to wait for the chefs to cook their meal all over again and throughout it all my spirit will be floating slowly away from a crumpled body covered in peppercorn sauce and mushy peas.
So consider that the next time you leave a 50 cent tip after your meal.
Yeah, so today was a pretty busy day at work. But you probably already got that.
Ciao darlings!

p.s. Creativity is a funny thing, I had no idea this was what I’d end up writing about; I started it four times, each time on a different theme, until finally all that stuff above started flowing out of my fingers. Sweet!
