Selfies, Trends and French Ladies (Day 4)

What is it with the trend these days of selfies, of documenting every single aspect of your life on social media, from what you ate for breakfast to what you’re wearing to your current mood…

Isn’t it weird?

I understand how it makes special stories out of the mundane – if you’ve ever watched a video of something you captured and added dramatic music or put it in slow motion, you may have noticed how your simple little clip was transformed from it’s plain, dowdy self into something far more special.

It’s hard to describe, but it’s like adding a little magic and mystery into the dull and lifeless monotony of adult life.

So maybe all this self-filming and photographing isn’t that weird after all; maybe it’s a kind of portal through which we can escape the deadness of ‘adulting’ and regain some of the delights that once accompanied our pudgy legs, sticky hands and big wide wonder-filled eyes.

Then again, maybe we’re just not willing to accept that we’re grown-ups who need to be mature and responsible and deal with reality, preferring instead to escape into the dreamy Insta-videos of those we follow in all their edited, filtered perfect-ness.

On another note, today in the restaurant, two people came up to the bar for coffees.  I approached them with a smile and said, “hello ladies!”.

One of them was a guy.

In my defense, his hair was EXACTLY the same as his mother’s.  And they were French.

It would’ve made a great Insta-story.

Ciao darlings!
